What’s open in Door County this winter?

Door County’s Covid Precautions:

On many Door County Facebook groups, I’ve noticed people asking what’s open in Door County right now. And while I can’t tell you everything that’s open, and what each establishment’s restrictions and hours might be, I can give you a good guide as to where you can eat in Door County right now.

As I’m going through my list of what’s open in Door County this winter, keep me honest. If I missed a spot, let me know and add it to the comments below. There are a great number of restaurants and shops, so chances are I didn’t see everything.

Sturgeon Bay:

Since Sturgeon Bay is less of a vacation-only destination, much of the downtown is open for business despite the pandemic. You still must adhere to Covid-19 restrictions when visiting the restaurants, galleries, hotels, and shops, but you won’t have any trouble finding a spot to eat, shop, or stay in Sturgeon Bay.

Sonny’s Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria is one location I can personally guarantee to be open. We stopped in last week and enjoyed a great pie and a couple beers. The tables were socially distanced, and a mask mandate was in place, so you should feel safe as you eat.

Egg Harbor:

In Egg Harbor, Mojo Rosa’s is open for dinner, as is Shipwrecked Brew Pub. We stopped into Shipwrecked for lunch one afternoon. We sat upstairs and were about as socially distanced as anyone could be – there wasn’t another patron within twenty feet of us.

One Barrel Brewing Company, along with Wild Pizza Works, next to the Main Street Market are also open in Egg Harbor, and they have outdoor firepits to sit around as you enjoy one of their beers.

Also open during these tough times are Casey’s BBQ & Smokehouse, Glacier Ledge Restaurant, The Fireside Restaurant, and Carrington Pub & Grill, along with all of Mojo Rosa’s sister restaurants (Bangkok, Village Café, Pink Bakery, & Villagios).

Fish Creek:

In Fish Creek, White Gull Inn is open for dine in and carryout. Numerous Covid restrictions are being enforced, including dining room capacity being limited at 50%. There are also changes to their fish boil, including the removal of the buffet line. Check their website if you have any questions about their Coronavirus policies.

Alexander’s, English Inn, Julie’s Park Café, Barringer’s, Wild Tomato Wood Fired Pizza & Grille, and Whistling Swan Inn are all also open in Fish Creek. Check their websites for times and service limitations.

Sister Bay:

In Sister Bay, Husby’s Food & Spirits and Sister Bay Bowl are both open for lunch and dinner. We ate at both restaurants, and numerous precautions are in place, including socially distanced tables, mask mandates, and at Sister Bay Bowl, plexiglass barriers.

Once you’re finished eating, you can even bowl a couple games at Sister Bay Bowl. The lanes are open, and when we were there, we were the only ones rolling, so we felt quite safe.

Down the street, Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant is open most days of the week, however this winter, they are closing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Chop, Skip Stone Coffee Roasters, Door County Bakery and McEvoy’s, as well as J.J.’s LaPuerta in North Sister Bay are open.

Ellison Bay:

Further up the peninsula in Ellison Bay, if you’re in need of a caffeine jolt, Brew is open, as is The Mink River Basin next door.

As I always do, I stopped into Brew one morning for a coffee. Spacing, mask mandates and plexiglass barriers all made the visit as safe as expected.

Other establishment open for business include Wickman House and Kick Ash Coffee.

Ephraim:

A number of restaurants are open for dine in and carry out service in Ephraim, including Good Eggs, Trixie’s and Chef’s Hat.

Baileys Harbor:

Heading back down the Lake Michigan side of Door County, both Coyote Roadhouse and Baileys Harbor Cornerstone Pub are open in Baileys Harbor.

In addition to Coyote Roadhouse, and Bailey’s Harbor Cornerstone Pub, Peninsula Pub and Chives Restaurant are open.

Carlsville:

On our way out of Door County, we made a stop at another of my favorite coffee houses: Door County Coffee and Tea in Carlsville. We stopped in for a quick jolt, and the smells as we walked in were awesome. They have a great selection, and the workers are always extremely warm, welcoming and knowledgeable.

Since I didn’t do that much shopping, and I didn’t stay at all the resorts, hotels, or B&B’s, I don’t have a firm grasp on everything that’s open in Door County.

What I do know is that most shops in Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, and Sister Bay were open, because I saw visitors going into several stores. By the same account, I can assume many Door County hotels were open as I saw cars in the parking lots, and people walking to and from the buildings.

Again, I do understand that this is not a complete list, but rather a sampling of what I noticed. So if you know a place that’s open, or if you want to add what’s listed, please add your comments.
