Door County Fall Lighthouse Festival: October 2-4
The Door County Fall Lighthouse Festival on October 2, 3, and 4 is one of the most distinctive events on the annual calendar and the one that gives lighthouse enthusiasts access they simply cannot get any other time of year. The festival, organized by the Door County Maritime Museum, opens all 11 of the county’s historic lighthouse stations across a three-day weekend with a combination of air tours, boat tours, and self-guided driving tours. Egg Harbor Pumpkin Patch Festival: October 10-11
The Egg Harbor Pumpkin Patch Festival on October 10 and 11 is the finest family fall festival in Door County and one of the most consistently enjoyable weekends of the season.
Running from 9 a.m. both days at Harbor View Park and throughout the village, the event is free to attend and built around the kind of activities that work for every age at once. Live music, carnival rides, a large arts and crafts vendor fair, face painting, pumpkin and scarecrow displays throughout the village, a roaming magician, kids games, bucket raffles, and food vendors fill both days.

Sister Bay Fall Fest: October 16-18
Sister Bay Fall Fest, celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026, is the largest and most celebrated festival in Door County. The three-day event runs October 16, 17, and 18 starting at 9 a.m. each day, and it fills lodging for miles in every direction for weeks.
Thousands of people show up every year, and the festival somehow still feels like a community celebration rather than a tourist event. That is the trick Sister Bay has been pulling off since 1945.

Jack O’Lantern Days, Fish Creek: October 31
Jack O’Lantern Days in Fish Creek brings the village to life at the end of the month with a costume parade down Main Street, pumpkin carvings, trick-or-treating throughout the village, mask making for kids at the Peninsula School of Art, Ghost Tours by the Door County Trolley on Friday and Saturday evenings, and the Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Hands on Art Studio.
The Gibraltar Fire Station Open House runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for families. It is a thoroughly local Halloween celebration with enough going on across several days to make it worth planning around.
Peninsula Players: Final Weeks
October is the final month of the Peninsula Players Theatre season, with Murder Girl running Tuesday through Sunday through closing night on October 18.

October is the finest month for hiking in Door County. The summer heat is gone, the trails are less crowded than they were in July, and the forest is doing things that no other season can match. Every trail in every state park in the county is open through October, and the views from the overlooks are at their annual peak.
The Eagle Trail in Peninsula State Park is a 2-mile moderate loop along the limestone blufftops above Green Bay with views through the fall canopy and across the water. It is the finest fall hike in the county.
The Sunset Trail through the heart of the park is wider and easier, equally good for hiking and biking, and the maple canopy in mid-October makes it one of the most accessible and visually rewarding fall color experiences in the park.
Sven’s Bluff is a short trail to a blufftop overlook with sweeping Green Bay views that rival Eagle Tower without the climb. Scenic Drives
The Door County Coastal Byway, a designated National Scenic Byway, is the definitive fall color drive in the county. The 66-mile loop follows Highway 42 north from Sturgeon Bay up the Green Bay side through Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay, and Gills Rock to Northport, then loops back south along Highway 57 on the Lake Michigan side through Baileys Harbor and Jacksonport back to Sturgeon Bay. Drive it without stops in two to three hours. Do it right and it takes a full day.
The stretch of Highway 42 between Ellison Bay and Northport is the most dramatic section of the fall color drive. The road narrows and curves through dense forest as it approaches the tip, with the canopy closing over the road in a way that puts you inside the color.
The Jens Jensen Curvy Road, the serpentine section of Highway 42 just south of the Washington Island Ferry dock at Northport, is one of the most photographed fall stretches in Wisconsin. Pull over when you can and take your time.
Highway 57 on the Lake Michigan side from Baileys Harbor through Jacksonport is quieter, less trafficked, and equally beautiful, with the lake visible through the thinning hardwoods and orchards heavy with late-season apples alongside the road.
