Fish Creek, Door County 2026: The Complete Visitor’s Guide

Some villages on the Door County peninsula are known for one thing. Fish Creek is known for everything. World-class theater inside a state park amphitheater. A fish boil at a century-old inn. A gallery that rivals anything in a major Midwest city. A drive-in movie theater that has been showing double features since before most of its current visitors were born. Hiking trails along limestone blufftops that drop sharply to Green Bay. And a village center compact enough to walk in an afternoon but rich enough to fill a week without repetition.

Fish Creek sits on the western shore of the peninsula on Green Bay, with Peninsula State Park beginning at its northern edge and the village’s own marina, public beach, and Sunset Beach Park anchoring the waterfront to the south. The 870 or so year-round residents who live here have built something genuinely rare: a community where the arts, the outdoors, the dining, and the character of the place itself are all operating at the same high level simultaneously. That is why visitors who come once tend to come back, and why the people who come back tend to keep coming back for decades.

This guide covers everything Fish Creek has to offer in 2026, from the restaurants, lodging, galleries, and shopping to the theater, festivals, beaches, and outdoor adventures that make it the most talked-about village in all of Door County.

About Fish Creek

Fish Creek was established in 1844 when Asa Thorp arrived by boat from Green Bay and became the first permanent settler on the Door County peninsula north of Sturgeon Bay. Thorp built a wharf, a general store, and a home, and the village that grew up around those first structures has maintained a remarkable continuity of character ever since. The name Fish Creek refers to the small stream that still runs through the village into the harbor, and the fishing and timber trades that defined the community in the 19th century left behind a collection of historic buildings along the main street that now house the restaurants, galleries, and boutiques that draw visitors from across the Midwest.

What makes Fish Creek genuinely different from other Door County villages is its combination of scale and completeness. It is small enough to walk entirely in an afternoon but contains enough restaurants, shops, galleries, and activities to fill a week without repetition. The proximity to Peninsula State Park, beginning literally at the village’s northern boundary, means that the finest state park in Wisconsin is accessible by foot or bike from any lodging in the village center. And the presence of two of the finest theater companies in the region, Northern Sky Theater and Peninsula Players Theatre, gives Fish Creek a cultural depth that is genuinely rare for a community of fewer than 1,000 year-round residents.

Peninsula State Park

Peninsula State Park is the crown jewel of Door County’s outdoor landscape and the defining feature of Fish Creek’s identity as a destination. Established in 1909, the 3,776-acre park encompasses eight miles of Green Bay shoreline, more than 20 miles of hiking trails, a paved bike trail suitable for all ages, the public sand beach at Nicolet Bay, an 18-hole golf course, 468 campsites across five campgrounds, the historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and the rebuilt Eagle Tower with its 850-foot accessible canopy walk rising 253 feet above the bay.

Eagle Tower, the park’s most visited attraction, is a 60-foot structure that opened in its current form in May 2021 after a six-year, $3.5 million restoration project. The observation deck sits 253 feet above Green Bay and is accessible by 95 stairs or by an 850-foot canopy walk that winds gradually above the treeline at a slope never exceeding five percent. The canopy walk is ADA-accessible and is the only known fully accessible wooden observation structure of its kind in the Midwest. On clear days, the views stretch across the bay to the islands of Green Bay and, on the finest days, to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The Eagle Trail along the blufftops is the park’s signature hike, running along the limestone cliffs above Green Bay with cliff-edge views that justify the effort at every step. The paved bike trail is one of the most popular cycling routes in Door County, and bike rentals are available from Nor Door Sport and Cyclery just outside the park entrance in the village. The park also contains the Northern Sky Theater outdoor amphitheater, where original Wisconsin-rooted musical comedies play under the stars from mid-June through August. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle sticker is required for entry, at $28 for Wisconsin plates and $38 for out-of-state. See our complete Peninsula State Park guide for everything the park has to offer.

Restaurants and Dining

Fish Creek has the most concentrated and consistently excellent dining scene of any village on the Door County peninsula. From a legendary century-old inn with a nationally celebrated breakfast to a wood-fired pizza kitchen, a supper-club-style steakhouse, and Door County’s most beloved classic tavern, the range and quality of options here is remarkable for a community this size. Our complete Door County restaurants guide covers the full peninsula, but here are the essential Fish Creek dining stops for 2026.

The White Gull Inn at 4225 Main Street is Fish Creek’s most celebrated restaurant and one of the most beloved dining destinations in all of Door County. This historic inn, operating since 1896, is nationally known for its cherry-stuffed French toast, which won Good Morning America’s Best Breakfast Challenge. The dining room is open daily for breakfast, and the inn hosts its celebrated fish boil multiple evenings per week. It is the rare restaurant where both the first and last meals of the day earn their reputations equally. Open year-round.

Wild Tomato Wood-Fired Pizza and Grille in Fish Creek delivers some of the finest pizza in Door County from a wood-fired oven that produces a crust with char, chew, and depth that a conventional grill cannot match. The menu is built around locally sourced and organic ingredients, and the outdoor patio is one of the finest warm-weather dining spaces in the village. Wild Tomato also has a location in Sister Bay. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. Open daily.

Bayside Tavern is a Fish Creek institution that has been gathering locals and visitors together for decades. The menu covers burgers, fish fry, salads, pizza, and the famous house chili, all served in a casual and genuinely welcoming atmosphere that makes it the social heart of the village for both regulars and first-time visitors. Thursday nights bring an open mic showcase of local talent. The Friday night fish fry is one of the best on the peninsula. Food is served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Open year-round.

Hill Street in Fish Creek is one of the most beloved bars on the peninsula, described as cozy, is always worth the stop. The no-substitutions menu philosophy signals a kitchen that knows what it is doing and wants to serve things the way they were designed. The burger earns some of the highest praise of any in Door County, and the outdoor bar in warm weather is one of the great simple pleasures of a Fish Creek visit. Open year-round.

Barringer’s Restaurant brings supper club elegance and locally sourced steaks, seafood, and seasonal fare to downtown Fish Creek in a renovated historic building with a bar opening to an outdoor seating area featuring a wood-burning outdoor fireplace. Craft cocktails, refined presentation, and a menu driven by local flavors make it one of the finest special-occasion dining options in the village. A natural choice for a celebratory dinner or a date night with a view.

Alexander’s Restaurant in Fish Creek is one of the most established dining destinations in the village, specializing in hand-cut steaks, seafood, fresh soups, and original creations alongside homemade pastries and desserts from an in-house pastry chef. The large bar and comfortable dining room make it a versatile choice for both casual and occasion dining. Pelletier’s Restaurant and Fish Boil at Founder’s Square is another excellent fish boil venue, set in one of the most charming locations in the village with its historic 1800s-era buildings and century-old trees.

Breakfast and Coffee

Fish Creek’s morning options are among the finest on the peninsula. The White Gull Inn’s cherry-stuffed French toast is the definitive Door County breakfast experience and worth planning your morning around. Blue Horse Beach Cafe at 4113 Main Street is open daily from 7 a.m. year-round, serving fair trade coffees, teas, handmade cinnamon rolls, and breakfast and lunch items from a new space across from the Fish Creek beach. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor deck. Julie’s Park Cafe at 4020 State Highway 42 opens early and sits right at the entrance to Peninsula State Park, making it the ideal pre-hike or pre-bike breakfast stop. The Park Scrambler and house cinnamon rolls are standouts. Open year-round.

For specialty coffee, Chef’s Hat Cafe on the harbor offers a beautiful patio and a morning menu that runs a step above standard diner fare, with Door County cherrywood-smoked bacon and fresh-baked scones among the highlights. Chef’s Hat is seasonal, typically operating May through October. Door County Coffee and Tea Company is a reliable year-round option just a few minutes south in Carlsville, where the coffee is roasted on site and a drive-through is available for those running behind schedule.

The Fish Boil

The Door County fish boil is one of the most iconic culinary traditions on the peninsula, and Fish Creek has two of the best. The White Gull Inn’s fish boil is the most celebrated in Door County, running multiple evenings per week from spring through fall with fresh Lake Michigan whitefish cooked over an outdoor fire alongside red potatoes and onions, finished with the dramatic boilover where the boilmaster throws a splash of kerosene on the fire to send a fireball into the air and push the oils from the fish to the surface. The meal comes with coleslaw, homemade bread, drawn butter, and Door County cherry pie for dessert. The White Gull’s fish boil setting, with the outdoor fire in the inn’s beautifully maintained grounds, is as much a visual experience as a culinary one. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Pelletier’s Restaurant and Fish Boil at Founder’s Square is the second excellent fish boil option in the village, set in one of the most charming locations in Fish Creek with its 1800s-era buildings and courtyard setting. It is a strong alternative when the White Gull is booked, and many visitors specifically prefer the Founder’s Square setting for its open, festive atmosphere. See our complete Door County fish boil guide for more detail on the tradition and all the operators across the peninsula.

Theater: Northern Sky and Peninsula Players

Fish Creek is home to two of the finest theater companies in the Midwest, and the combination of performances available here through a single summer weekend is genuinely extraordinary for a community this size.

Northern Sky Theater performs at the outdoor amphitheater inside Peninsula State Park, where original Wisconsin-rooted musical comedies play under a canopy of cedar and pine trees from mid-June through late August. The Chicago Tribune has called it “as much a Door County tradition as cherry preserves” and “one of the most exceptional professional troupes in the country.” The 2026 outdoor season includes the world premiere of The Thing with Feathers by Robin Share and Clay Zambo, Something in the Water returning for its second outdoor season, and When Butter Churns to Gold. The company’s indoor Gould Theater in Fish Creek runs additional programming including a week of Fred Alley tribute concerts in June and the world premiere of George and Gracie: A Love Story in the fall season. Tickets for the outdoor amphitheater can be purchased at the box office one hour before showtime or in advance at northernskytheater.com. Leashed dogs are welcome at the outdoor venue. Popular shows and peak weekends sell out well in advance, so booking early is strongly recommended.

Peninsula Players Theatre is America’s oldest professional resident summer theater, operating since 1935 in its beautiful garden theater setting just south of Fish Creek. The company produces a full season of comedies, dramas, and musicals from late spring through October in an outdoor theater that remains one of the most intimate and atmospheric performance spaces in the region. The 2026 season runs through October with a rotating program of productions. Weekend performances sell out quickly, and booking advance tickets at peninsulaplayers.com is strongly recommended for any summer visit. The garden theater setting, with performances outdoors in warm weather and the surrounding woodland providing a natural backdrop, is one of those experiences that makes Door County unlike anywhere else in the Midwest.

The Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek is a 600-seat year-round venue hosting concerts, films, lectures, and special events that keep Fish Creek culturally active even through the quieter winter months. Check the auditorium’s schedule for the current 2026 programming calendar.

Art Galleries and the Arts Scene

Fish Creek has one of the most distinguished gallery scenes on the Door County peninsula, anchored by several institutions that draw visitors from across the region specifically for the quality of their collections and programming.

Edgewood Orchard Galleries is widely regarded as the finest art gallery in Door County and one of the most respected in the Midwest. Set in a converted orchard barn just outside the village center, the gallery features works by regional and national artists in painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and photography, alongside a sculpture garden that makes the grounds themselves worth exploring. The caliber of the work represented here consistently surprises visitors who arrive expecting a tourist-town gallery and find instead a serious institution with serious art.

Plum Bottom Gallery is one of Door County’s most distinctive gallery spaces, focusing on contemporary ceramics and fine craft by artists whose work earns equal respect from collectors and casual visitors. The Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek combines a rotating gallery of contemporary art with working studio spaces, adult workshops, and residency programs that bring artists from across the Midwest to the peninsula each season. The gallery exhibitions rotate regularly enough to reward repeat visits throughout the summer.

The Alexander Noble House Museum, operated by the Gibraltar Historical Association, is one of the oldest homes in Fish Creek and offers a rare window into upper-middle-class village life in the late 1800s. The home is furnished with period artifacts that trace the village’s transformation from a lumber and fishing settlement into the destination it remains today. Check historicnoblehouse.org for 2026 hours and programming.

Door County Contemporary, a major annual art fair, returns to the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek on June 4-7, 2026. The 2026 event features 26 galleries, 4 nonprofits, expanded programming, enhanced VIP experiences, and partnerships with major art institutions. Site-specific sculpture, curated outdoor spaces, food, drink, and music complement the visual arts programming. It is one of the most significant art events of the Door County calendar and worth planning a trip around for serious art collectors and enthusiasts.

Shopping in Fish Creek

Fish Creek is the shopping capital of Door County, with the highest concentration of independently owned boutiques, specialty stores, and galleries of any village on the peninsula. Every store is independently owned. Nothing here is a chain. And the variety across galleries, clothing boutiques, candy shops, jewelry stores, specialty food shops, and gift stores rewards genuine browsing in a way that planned shopping rarely does.

Founder’s Square is the anchor of the Fish Creek shopping experience, a carefully maintained collection of boutiques in 1800s-era historic buildings in the heart of the village. Door County Confectionery at Founder’s Square is one of the most beloved sweet shops on the peninsula, with house-made chocolates, fudge, and cherry-themed confections that make excellent gifts. Sister Golden, Hide Side Corner Shop, and several other boutiques fill the square with a rotating mix of clothing, gifts, and jewelry that changes with the season.

Top of the Hill Shops, at the junction of Highway 42 and County Highway F at the north end of the village, adds another 20-plus stores to the Fish Creek retail landscape, including wine shops, fashion boutiques, home goods stores, and specialty gift retailers. The concentration of shopping within easy walking distance of each other makes Fish Creek uniquely suited to a slow morning of browsing that turns into an afternoon without anyone noticing how much time has passed.

Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery and Market, just south of Fish Creek, reopens its tasting room in spring with cherry wines, dried cherries, jams, and orchard products alongside a winery experience set among orchards that bloom beautifully in late May. It is one of the most pleasant stops on the Door County wine trail and a natural pairing with a shopping morning in the village.

Planning Tips for Fish Creek

Fish Creek is the most visited village on the Door County peninsula and the most activity-dense, which means a few practical considerations can make the difference between a smooth visit and a frustrating one.

Parking in the village center is limited on peak summer weekends. The public lot near the Fish Creek Public Beach and marina is the most convenient option, and the compact village is easily walkable from there. Arriving before 10 a.m. on summer Saturdays and Sundays almost always means finding parking without difficulty. Arriving after noon on those same days frequently means circling the village for 20 minutes.

Book restaurant reservations and theater tickets before leaving home. The White Gull Inn fish boil, Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula Players, and weekend dinner at Barringer’s all sell out regularly. A few minutes of advance planning prevents the most common Fish Creek disappointment, which is arriving at the most celebrated restaurant on the peninsula on a Saturday night without a reservation and spending the evening somewhere less satisfying.

Buy a Wisconsin State Park vehicle sticker on your first visit to Peninsula State Park. The annual sticker at $28 for Wisconsin plates and $38 for out-of-state covers all Wisconsin state parks for a full year and pays for itself if you visit the park more than twice. A Wisconsin Free Fun Weekend on June 6 and 7, 2026 waives all vehicle admission fees at every state park in the system, making that weekend an ideal time for a first state park visit.

Fish Creek operates genuinely year-round in a way that many Door County villages do not. The White Gull Inn, Blue Horse Beach Cafe, Julie’s Park Cafe, Bayside Tavern, Hill Street, and Peninsula State Park are all open through the winter months, and the village has a quiet, authentic character in November through April that is completely different from summer and equally worth experiencing for those who seek it out. For a complete overview of everything the Door County peninsula has to offer, our complete Door County guide is the best starting point.
