Where to Golf in Door County
Spring is here, and that means it’s time to hit the links. And there’s no better place to golf than in Door County.
With some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, Door County has become a top destination spot for golfers. In fact, thousands of people every year visit Door County simply for the rolling fairways, well-manicured greens, and beautiful views.
With nearly a dozen courses, golf in Door County is sure to excite and challenge golfers of every skill level.
And I’m one of them. Many times, I’ll head up to Door County just for a short golf weekend. As I’ve said multiple times, I’m not a scratch golfer, but I love to hit the links. I’ve tee’d off at many of Door County’s golf courses, and they’re all spectacular. They each have their own unique appeal, and they are all worth visiting.
In addition to my personal experience on the links, I’ve talked with hundreds of Door County golfers, and they’ve all reported the same. Golf in Door County is simply awesome.
So, if you’re looking for a quick round on the links, or a weekend getaway, here’s a list of the golf courses in Door County.
Door County Golf: Alpine Resort & Golf
Located on the shoreline in Egg Harbor, Alpine Resort & Golf is both beautiful and challenging. I’ve stayed at Alpine Resort and played 18 of its 36 holes, and it did not disappoint. With one of the most scenic holes in the County, and world-class amenities, I highly recommend Alpine Resort & Golf.
But as we all know, 2020 was a rough year for all of us, and it was no different for Alpine. Early in the pandemic, Alpine make the difficult decision to close. A decision on 2021 is not known at this time.

Door County Golf: The Orchards at Egg Harbor
I love golfing The Orchards at Egg Harbor. I rarely do well here, but it is so beautiful, it’s hard to complain.
The 18-hole championship course might be one of the more difficult on the peninsula, but for top notch golfers, that’s a good thing. The way this course settles through the woods, meadows, and orchards, it feels like it’s always been here.
The course is a par-72 with a rating of 75.0, and a slope of 131. According to their website, it plays harder because of the winds off the lake, and I can vouge for that.

Door County Golf: 27 Pines Golf Course
Lesser known 27 Pines Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay is a course I’ve never had the pleasure of playing. I am certainly going to make it a point to visit on my next trip. I’ll be sure to update when I’ve played a round.
But as the name suggests, it’s a nine-hole, par 27 course.
Perfect for young, and less experienced golfers the shorter holes offer less of a challenge, and more of an opportunity to just get out and enjoy the links.

Door County Golf: Cherry Hills Golf & Lodge
Prior to having children, my wife and spent a weekend in Door County and enjoyed a nice round at Cherry Hills Golf & Lodge in Sturgeon Bay.
Not overly difficult, it’s a nice course for those just looking to enjoy a quiet day on the links., It’s an 18-hole, par 72 course with gentle elevation changes and few hazards. For someone like me, that’s awesome, because as Shooter McGavin says in Happy Gilmore, I spend more time in the sand than David Hasselhoff.
Cherry Hills saw new leadership in 2015 and made it a priority to improve course conditions and player experience. Talking to golfers across the Peninsula, they’ve done just that.

Door County Golf: Deer Run Golf Course
Deer Run Golf Course is a little harder to get to than the others on the list, but if you’re ever on Washington Island, I urge you to give it a shot.
It’s a 9-hole course that’s absolutely stunning. Despite the fact it’s only nine holes, it’s quite challenging with water and sand throughout. You must take the ferry across to the Island, so if you go, make a day of it and enjoy everything Washington Island has to offer.
To get there, take one of the Washington Island ferries from the Northport Pier, two miles east of Gills Rock.

Another beautiful course that should be high on your list is Idlewild Golf Club in Sturgeon Bay. Steps from the beautiful Potawatomi State Park, Idlewild is a superb winding course filled with trees, water, and bunkers.
The 18-hole course is highlighted by its finishing-hole island green, and has five sets of tees for different skill levels. There’s literally a tee box for everyone, regardless of ability.

Door County Golf: Maxwelton Braes Golf Course
On the east side of the peninsula, Maxwelton Braes Golf Course in Baileys Harbor is a popular destination.
Although I’ve never golfed here, I have stayed at the lodge, and it was a special experience. The rooms were large, and it was so quiet, it felt like we were the only ones in the world.
The course itself is an 18-hole, par 70 course that spans highway 57. Season passes are available if you plan on making Maxwelton Braes your course of choice.

Door County Golf: Peninsula State Park Golf Course
Peninsula State Park Golf Course in Ephraim is my favorite course in Door County. In fact, it was voted the Best Golf Course in Door County in TheBestOfDoorCounty.com’s 2020 reader’s poll.
Perhaps it’s because of the experiences I’ve had here, or just because of the views, but I love this course. I’ve played here so many times – with my wife, my kids, and my buddies – and every time, we all had a great day on the links.
Overlooking Ephraim, and winding through the state park, you won’t find a more serene course. It’s just challenging enough to keep boredom from setting in, but not too difficult that you want to throw your clubs.
Plus, across highway 42, there’s a separate 6-hole, par 18 course that’s a perfect sprint round. We like to bring the kids here if we have just about an hour to play. It’s quick, easy, and fun. You must give it a try.

Door County Golf: Little Sweden Golf Course
If you’re staying at Little Sweden resort in Fish Creek, you have a special perk. There’s a PGA-recognized nine-hole golf course right on site.
Just step out your door and you’re on the tee box ready to go. As they say, there’s no tee time, no pressure, no stress.
Plus, they offer free – yes, free – club rental if you don’t have clubs. It really is the perfect set up for a golf getaway.

Door County Golf: Stonehedge Golf Course
Finally, Stonehedge Golf Course in Egg Harbor is a 9 hole course that is great for the whole family. When we were in Door County last October, we stopped by Stonehedge, but not for traditional golf.
Stonehedge is also known on the peninsula for footgolf. We’d never tried it before, but we’re glad we did. Footgolf is where you kick a soccer ball rather than swing a club. It’s played on the same course, at the same time as regular golf.
It’s an interesting thing to wind between the golfers kicking a soccer ball. Footgolf is available after 3pm to keep the congestion from overwhelming the course.
Whether you want a quick 9 holes, or want to try footgolf, Stonehedge Golf Course is a great option.

That’s a lot of golf options for a weekend getaway. So regardless of your ability, get out and take a swing… and let me know what you think.
